Growing Pains

Aside from being one of my favorite childhood favorite TV shows, growing pains are no joke. Many times God allows us to be in uncomfortable, even painful circumstances to push us to grow. This stretching and strengthening exercise makes up your most emotionally and sometimes physically difficult times in life.

Looking at my parents’ lives I can see how much their marriage grew through their suffering during four years trying to adopt and years of caring for their ailing parents. God used each of these times to improve on their love for one another and for God himself. Seeing their growth gives me comfort in this season of life.

A friend and I were just talking recently about a time of suffering in her life. She described feeling small. I remember each day telling her she was still big, but it was hard for her to see her own strength. Now that a few years have passed she tells me she was always big, but she just couldn’t see it.

I have felt small during the last few weeks. I have thought about giving up, but it’s impossible to give up on life when God is at the center of it. He simply doesn’t stand for quitters of life. Like a parent he doesn’t always give the pouting child his full comforting attention during those moments of feeling small because he knows there’s something more to gain from our suffering and pain. He knows when watching from a distance is more helpful than immediately giving us comfort.

I am up at 4:00 a.m. writing this post because I am very uncomfortable in life right now. I have felt small, sad, angry, confused, even sick from the stress and pain of growing. When God woke me up at 3:30 this morning, even in my discomfort I felt things would be okay because this is just the feeling you get during the strengthening and refining process. I have witnessed many testimonies of the strength that comes from this pain, and it is worth it.

A loving God is not a God that gives us a life full of nothing but easy moments.

Please share your testimony of the growth and strength that came from your suffering.

Chelsea, thanks for sharing your growing pains. You are not alone. We are all under the loving hand of our heavenly Father, discipling us and pruning us so we may be more fruitful and grow into his likeness. I have my fair share of trials and tribulation in life. Presently I am going through difficult and trying circumstances as well. The time of pressure and heat reveals what is in our heart, and test our faith. Instead of giving up, it is time to press even more into the Lord. I am practicing to gaze my eyes on the Lord, on the goodness of His nature, to walk by faith and not by sight, to trust him with all my heart and not to lean on my own understanding. In all my ways acknowledge him and he will make my path straight. If I dwell on my circumstances and problems, and magnify them, and making my problems my idols, I will easily sink like Peter who took his eyes off Jesus while he walked on water. As he turned his eyes to look at the turbulent water around him, he sank.
A few weeks ago I was at my daughter’s home watching a reality show called Ninja Warriors. The contestant has go through many obstacles to make it to the finish line. Many were able to overcome the obstacles until near the end. They were too weak and tired to overcome the last obstacle. Only the strong were able to make it to the finish line. Only one made it on that show. The contestant has to go through many hours of disciplined training to build up the muscle strength in order to overcome the obstacles. God is training our faith muscles and strengthening them through trials so we can be over-comers in the last days.
May we all run the race and finish well. May we all hear from our Heavenly Father on that day when we see Him face to face, “You are my beloved son/daughter whom I am well pleased. You are my good and faithful servant. Here is your crown of righteousness.”

    Hebrews 12:1-2New International Version (NIV)

12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

I am so happy and proud of you for not letting life get you down. You are a very strong and faithful person. A lot of people would be bitter, angry and give up but you know God is there and things will get better. You always amaze me, so proud of the person you are.
